Genesis 1:26-28a

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them,

Our family recently added a new member in the form of a chocolate lab puppy called Maisey.  I have been reminded over and over again in the past weeks just how much attention and positive direction puppies require.  There have been a few sleepless nights and it is an endless process of keeping her from chewing on pretty much everything we don’t want destroyed.  And yet most of our days with this new addition have been full of great joy and rich memories.  Even through the moments of frustration and challenge we are all very thankful to have this little bundle of joy in our lives.

In our Genesis account of Creation, we hear that God created the sun and moon, the earth and the universe, the seas and the land, the animals of the air and the animals of the sea and all the creeping crawling things that move upon the face of the earth.  After every day of creation God looked at everything that God had created and declared indeed that it was good!  Finally, on the sixth day when God created humankind, in God’s own image God declared that what God had created was very good and God entrusted creation to humanity to tend and to keep.

During this time of virus induced social distancing and shutdown I have been seeing reports on the news of how carbon and other emissions in the atmosphere are becoming noticeably reduced.  And as I’ve reflected on this new reality it makes me mindful of how much of an impact we can make upon the earth when we come together as community to care.  Perhaps there are lessons we can all learn from this time that can help to inform how we live and care for all of creation as we move forward in the life God calls us to live.

Prayer: God of creation, guide our living that we might tend to each other and all of creation through our actions of stewardship and care.   Amen
