The Rev. Dr. Erick Thompson
Pastor Erick joined St. John as Senior Pastor in the summer of 2017. Pastor Erick grew up in central Minnesota and attended Gustavus Adolphus College where he majored in History and Russian Studies. After college, he began his studies at Luther Seminary, graduating in 1999 with his Masters of Divinity. Pastor Erick has served parishes in Minnesota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and North Dakota. Throughout his ministry, Pastor Erick, a life-long learner, has felt the call to teach. He earned his Masters of Theology in Church History from Luther Seminary, and his Th.M. and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Pastor Erick has taught over 20 courses at Augsburg University (Minneapolis) and Thiel College (Greenville, PA) and hopes to teach a religion course this spring at Concordia!
As St. John’s Senior Pastor, Pastor Erick is passionate about connecting God with our present realities. Rather than a God far off, Pastor Erick believes we have a God nearby, whose unfailing love and presence are spoken into our lives day after day. Pastor Erick hopes that community of St. John will continue to be informed by this grace-filled abundance so that they will be good news for all people they encounter, especially those who are most vulnerable and most in pain.
Pastor Erick and his wife, Kara, and their two beloved daughters, Olivia and Marit, moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area in late 2016. Pastor Erick enjoys watching movies, sports (especially the Vikings!), reading, talking walks, and having great conversations with friends and strangers, alike.
The rest you can only know by getting to know him!
