Genesis 12:1-9
1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him;
The story of father Abram is a story of trust. Abram’s faith is lived out through trusting in the promise that God will be true to God’s word and will watch over and keep Abram and his family as they follow where it is that God leads. I wonder if today we also maybe invited to trust that the God who watched over and kept Abram is at work watching over and keeping us.
Trust can be a hard thing, especially when we are called to put our trust in someone other than ourselves. I remember when I was a little kid trying to learn to ride my bicycle. I worked on it all day on my own and then when my dad returned home from work, he joined me out in the driveway holding the back of my bike and running along me as I learned how to balance. When it seemed like I was catching on he did what most good dads do, he let go. For a few glorious seconds, I was riding on that bike all by myself. Then I looked to see where he was, and when I noticed he wasn’t beside me, I freaked out and ran my bike smack dab into the the mailbox. I have to admit it took me a little while to trust my dad to hang on again, but because I trusted in his love and faithfulness, in just a short while I was on that bike again with Dad next to me.
As we face together this time of uncertainty, we do so, trusting in the God who runs beside us, promising to provide support and guidance as we learn to balance living in a new and unfamiliar way. Thank God for the gift of faith, and may we all be guided in that faith to trust that the God of Abraham is with us to guide us through today, tomorrow and all the days to come.
Prayer: God of faithfulness, guide our paths and direct our ways as we learn to balance our lives in faith together in this new and unfamiliar time. Help to direct our ways and forever hold us in our times of need, for we ask in Jesus name. AMEN
