Acts 2:44-47
They Shared All Things In Common
All who believed were together and has all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were saved.
This biblical story has a theme: they shared all things in common. The newly baptized believers ( not yet called Christians ) worshipped in the temple and together they shared bread and the Word. They took care of each other.
As we read about Jesus’s earliest followers, we too can share in this theme: they shared all things in common. But with a huge difference: the earliest believers shared willingly, with joy and thanksgiving. Consider how we are sharing today: some are sharing a workplace with the children’s play area. All of us are sharing reminders about distancing, face masks, hand washing and all. It seems we are all at risk in this strange and eerie time. Yes, we are sharing, but the sharing is not joyful and redeeming. And yet, we are sharing a purpose: to love and serve our neighbors by isolating in our homes. Yes, we take care of each other.
Prayer
Jesus, remind us to renew our faith every day. While viruses don’t discriminate between us, neither should your love. Send us your love now. Amen
