Hebrews  11:1

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

We don’t know a lot about the book of Hebrews. We don’t really know who wrote it or who is was written to. All we really know is that it was likely a Christian sermon written to a congregation facing a crisis of faith.  And the book of Hebrews is the pastor’s sermon to a tired congregation.

Which gets me wondering – are you tired? I’m tired. I’m tired, of being away from this community I love, I’m tired of worrying if a simple trip to the grocery store could result in sickness for me or others.  I’m tired of not being able to spend time with friends and loved ones.  I’m tired of feeling so powerless to all that is going on.

I’m so thankful that this Hebrews community exists in our Bibles, because it tells me that we’ve been here before. Many Christians and many Christian communities have struggled with their faith and grown weary and we’ve come through it.  We are part of a community of faith not immune to the challenges and struggles of this terrible and beautiful world. We are a part of a community of faith who trust in the promise that even when times are difficult, God is faithful and is with us even when we can’t see God.

I’m not sure where your life is at right now. But if you’re tired, if you are worn out by what’s happening in your life and in the world around us, know that you are a part of a community who will carry the faith with you and if necessary for you. If your struggling and uncertain of the future and God’s presence with us in the midst of what is happening please take heart, because we are not alone.  God and the community of faith from all generations is with us to help us through.

Prayer:  Gracious God who knows our struggles, abide with us when we are weary. Help us to see your presence at work around us through the care of others and through the silent and gentle nudging of your Spirit.  Amen
